The Power of One Bold Piece of Art with Dan Jamieson

Dan Jamieson makes work that gets read, re-read, and quietly lodged in your brain. His cult Hate Plates have built a following on the kind of dry, knowing humour that feels like it was written just for you - and his screen prints carry that same energy at a grander scale. We sat down with Dan - whose work you can find on Glassette, including in our Art Kiosk collection - to talk about why bold art anchors a room rather than overwhelming it, where his best phrases come from, and why he thinks safe choices are usually the ones you'll regret most. Funny, frank, and surprisingly freeing if you've ever stood in front of a blank wall and talked yourself out of something you loved.


Interview with Dan
You’re known for pieces that feel witty, graphic and a little confrontational. Have you always been drawn to bold expression, or did that evolve over time?
Yeah, I guess I would say I have always leaned towards bold expression. It's great with art and with the hate plates, because you can use it as a tool to help say something you want to convey without having to say it directly. If something is bold it tends to be eye catching and can draw someone in.
Let’s talk about the Hate Plates. Where do the phrases come from, are they overheard, personal, reactive, or purely instinctive?
They mainly come from interactions and observations from daily life. Some of them are from socialising with friends and any kind of misplaced annoyances or grievances - you can let the hate plate say it rather than having to say something yourself. I think everyone can relate to some of them because everyone has similar situations that they go through day to day. A lot of them come from hanging out with people, witnessing people's annoying habits, maybe family's annoying habits too, and putting them forward into work. I guess people are annoying - I’m annoying, but that’s ok.
Humour runs through your work. How important is playfulness when you’re tackling something that might otherwise feel sharp or provocative?
Yeah, there is sometimes a more obviously provocative nature in the work, but I feel it is a light-hearted tongue in cheek response - occasionally some people do see it as more blunt, and that's fine if they interpret it as such, but they are meant to be a playful, distracting response to everyday life situations. I'm never that cutting, I think - and if people do take it as too sharp, then just scroll past, move on - my artwork isn't for you and I’m ok with that. I know that it won’t appeal to everyone. Some responses might even help fuel new work.
When someone buys one of your more graphic pieces, what do you hope it does to their space, disrupt it, anchor it, lighten it?
Anchor it, so it's like a focal point of the room, because I feel like with the text, it’s something that if your eye is drawn to it, and then you'll immediately start reading it and it will probably provoke a reaction - and then it's a conversation starter.


You often work with strong text and simple forms. Is that restraint intentional - a way to let the message breathe?
It's intentional, it's like the way that I work with ceramics, like it all starts with a slab of clay cut out, not too much strict thought about the shape but obviously a roundish shape. And then I'll scratch in the text so then the text helps form the actual piece, and then there’s more decorative elements, like the glaze, text colour and edge finishes. With the screen prints, its a bit different, I wanted to elevate them as with it being a larger piece, I felt it needed something extra, for example for the London print, a tasty gold glitzy background, so it's not just a straight replica of the hate plates. With using that larger scale, I felt they would benefit from being more brilliantly bold and eye-catching. So, yeah, I also wanted the gold shape to mimic the shape of an original hate plate, and then the text to fill in that with different colours, so that one is more attention seeking.
For someone with a calm, minimal interior, how would you suggest introducing a piece with attitude without overwhelming the room?
I just wouldn't be afraid and just go into it. If you like something, or like something of mine, and you want to put it in a room, you'll always find space to put it in that room, so don't stress about it. You can find other things to help balance and find a mood that sits well with you. Don’t overthink it and let your gut guide you.
Do you think art should reflect who we are - or who we’d like to be?
I guess a reflection of who we are. If I personally like something art-wise, sometimes you might not know exactly know why you like something, but there's something about it, it's a reflection of your likes, tastes and desires. Or it could be something that provokes a powerful reaction in you, that moves and stimulates you.


Has your relationship with your own work changed over time? Are you more cautious now, or more fearless?
From making hate plates and having the reaction that they've had, its been wonderful, and having that backing does kind of steer you into being maybe a bit more confident and experimental and playful with ideas. It's hard not to get too wrapped up sometimes into, say, Instagram and stuff, and pieces that get well-liked. Does that mean that the piece is a popular piece, or is it just that it's got caught up in an algorithm?
Mostly I’ll know what kind of idea or message I want to make, and I’ll try not to worry too much about what people might think about it. If I have an idea that I want to put onto a hate plate, I’ll usually do it within the week, if it's a burning idea that I’m desperate to explore and see come to life.
If someone is staring at a blank wall and hesitating, what would you say to encourage them to choose something with conviction?
Just pick a colour and paint it to start and then find stuff that you love. I feel like everyone likes something as a subject matter, and likes to collect things. So start with putting together all your favourite things on that wall. You want to make something that, when you look at it, will make you happy, and give you a bit of a heart flutter, and also something that you can change and modify, so it's not always constant, because your attitudes and moods change. So you might want to change stuff around, once a year, twice a year, every couple of years. But yeah, I think just not to be afraid with starting and jumping into it, and coming up with something that you love, and that every me you walk past, you'll still love, and grow to love even more and feels inspiring and mood lifting. I think that was quite a good answer.
For anyone wanting to buy their first meaningful piece of art - or start collecting more intentionally - what’s your advice?
I would go round, like, art fairs or markets, and look at things that again, makes your heart flutter a bit, and just start collecting things that sing to you and make you happy or feel something. You can pick up stuff in the tens of pounds, not always the hundreds of pounds - Basically, start collating things that make you feel really happy. I think that's the best way to go. If it's sparked something in you, then that piece is telling you that it belongs with you. So dive into it, get it, love it. You won’t regret it.

First idea of the day: notebook or Notes app?
Oh, I mean, I love notebooks, I've got lots round the office and the intention is to fill them.. But I normally get the phone, if I have an idea, it's there, and then I can sync it with the computer, so I can see the ideas when I’m making in the studio. Sadly, digital, but yeah, I don't know, it's a quick fire question, I'm making this a long answer, I'm sorry - app.

Interior designers and wine.
One word you overuse?

Most surprising reaction someone’s had to a piece?
Someone said that they were not funny or clever, which I quite like to use as a tagline about my work.
Silence or music in the studio?
Oh, I'm a bit of both, silence if I'm really, really stressed and there's too much to do, sometimes I can't concentrate with music, but most of the time, music all the time. It helps to motivate, inspire and who doesn’t love a little studio dance.
One rule about interiors you love breaking?
Don’t follow trends. Go with your first instinct on the colour, don't overthink with loads of samples - just go with what you picked in the first place.
Art should be… (one word).

Marty's Cracklin’ spicy vinegar flavour.. I highly recommend them.
Best thing about being an artist?
It's always different every day. There is a self made structure to it but it's fun - it is stressful at times, but mainly it’s very fun. I wouldn't want it any other way and I’m very grateful that I get to do this for a living.
