VARMBLIXT, Made Smarter
IKEA and Sabine Marcelis return with an upgraded take on the iconic VARMBLIXT donut and pendant lamps, now with smart, customisable lighting. Keeping the same sculptural silhouettes, the new versions are built on the Matter standard for seamless smart home compatibility, and finished in a soft matt texture that gently diffuses light. The donut lamp features 12 curated colour sequences, plus full spectrum control via the IKEA Home Smart app, while the pendant shifts through nuanced white tones, from crisp to candle-warm. Launching this April.
There are certain design objects that enter the home and instantly feel iconic. They become part sculpture, part atmosphere - and before long, part ritual.
When IKEA and Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis first unveiled VARMBLIXT, it was exactly that: a lighting collection that blurred the lines between functional object and luminous art. The donut lamp, in particular, became a modern icon - a softly radiant circle that felt equally at home on a shelf, a bedside table, or in a gallery.
Now, IKEA and Marcelis are bringing VARMBLIXT back - reimagined, upgraded, and unmistakably itself. The sculptural forms remain, but the experience evolves. Because this time, VARMBLIXT isn’t just beautiful, it’s smart.
The updated VARMBLIXT lamps keep their recognisable silhouettes, but introduce a new layer of atmosphere: customisable lighting designed to shift with your day, your mood, your space. The new versions are built on the Matter standard, meaning they’re designed to work seamlessly across major smart home ecosystems. In other words: your lighting becomes more intuitive, more flexible - and far less locked into one brand’s tech universe. And then there’s the finish: a new matt surface that softens the output, letting the light bloom gently rather than glare. It’s a subtle change that makes a big difference - the kind of glow that makes a room feel calmer, warmer, more intentional.
The updated VARMBLIXT collection launches in April. For availability and details, IKEA recommends contacting your nearest store. Read more on the IKEA website here.
