Where to go for summer dates in London
We all know summer changes (and raises the stakes of) a London date. The city stays light until ten, the pavements fill up, and suddenly "drinks?" feels like a wasted opportunity. This is a list for doing it properly - organised not by postcode but by the kind of date you're on. The nervy first coffee. The ice cream that's really an excuse for a walk. The wine bar where things get interesting. The spot that becomes a permanent fixture long after the first, third and fifth date. And, naturally, for when it matters, somewhere special. The coffee date
Cremer, Hoxton - Coffee that stretches into lunch if it's going well. An exit strategy if it isn't.
Esters, Stoke Newington - Serious coffee, small room, and Clissold Park two minutes away for the debrief walk.
Lot 103, Newington Green - A neighbourhood room that does its own thing quietly. Order the donuts. Share it, if you're brave.
Special Guests, Marylebone - Maybe the best coffee in the city, but be prepared to queue.
The ice cream date
Happy Endings, Hackney - Ice cream sandwiches worth crossing London for. Plus, the name does some of the heavy lifting.
The Dreamery, Islington - Small-batch scoops at the end of the Village. Built for a slow lap of Lloyd Park.
Soft & Swirly, Hackney - Soft serve taken seriously. A date that costs a fiver and lands anyway.
Chunk Provisions, Leyton - Ice cream sandwiches, soft serve, and a reason to finally go south.
The wine bar date
New Forms, Chelsea - Records, natural wine, low lighting. Talk less, listen more.
Bambi, London Fields - Arguably built for flirting, it’s a spot that’s low-lit and loud in the right way.
Forza Wine at the National Theatre - The terrace, the river, the sunset: consider this Central London's best-value view.
Top Cuvée, Highbury - A neighbourhood wine bar that takes the wine, not itself, seriously.
The third date - the special one
Perilla, Newington Green - Quietly one of London's best restaurants, and a hotspot for celebs like Harry Styles.
Acme Fire Cult, Dalston - Live fire and sharing plates. The drama is built in.
Brawn, Columbia Road - The "I actually like you" dinner. Has been for years.
Tiella, Columbia Road - Coastal Italian on the flower market. Sunday afternoon, taken slowly.
The pub date
The Plimsoll, Finsbury Park – A proper pub with a famous cheeseburger. No pretence to hide behind.
The Albion, Islington – Wisteria, a walled garden, and pints that go down easily.
The Marksman, Hackney Road – An East London institution – take them upstairs if it's going well.
The Camberwell Arms – South London's finest. Consider a Sunday roast as a relationship milestone.
