Iakov Chernikhov was a constructivist architect and graphic designer born in Pavlograd in the Russian Empire (now Ukraine) in 1889.
This drawing is part of a series of compositional studies he made. Concentric circles of dots swirl about one another to form overlapping squares - an unexpected interplay of texture and shape. Looking closely, the pattern of the dots could be the surface of something living. It is a beautiful and intriguing work.
