There are pints, and then there are pints worth making a journey for. From the storied snug of The Auld Shillelagh to the unhurried pleasures of Bulman Pub on Kinsale Harbour, to The Prospect of Whitby's unbeatable spot on the Thames - consider this your guide to the Guinness worth seeking out. Below, every pour that earns its reputation.

The Auld Shillelagh

A proper neighbourhood pub with no interest in being anything else, The Auld Shillelagh pours one of the finest Guinnesses in London. The kind of place that reminds you what a pub is actually for - dark, unhurried, and exactly right. Go on a weekday afternoon and you'll never want to leave.

John Fallon's

A quiet institution on the Liberties, John Fallon's has been doing this long enough to make it look effortless. No frills, no fuss - just one of Dublin's most reliably excellent pints, pulled with the kind of quiet confidence that only comes with practice. The sort of pub that makes you feel like a regular from the moment you walk in.

The Star

The Drunken Poet

The Prospect of Whitby

One of London's oldest riverside pubs, The Prospect of Whitby has been drawing people to the banks of the Thames since the 16th century - and the Guinness has kept pace with the reputation. Steeped in history but never stuffy, it's a pint best enjoyed with a view of the water and nowhere else to be.

The Liberty Belle

A family-owned institution on Francis Street since 1845, The Liberty Belle sits in the heart of the Liberties and has absolutely no intention of changing. The Guinness is as good as you'd hope, the locals are salt of the earth, and the legendary toastie and pint deal is reason enough to visit - a proper Dublin pub in every sense

11th Street Bar

Tucked between Avenues A and B in the East Village, 11th Street Bar is the kind of unpretentious neighbourhood spot that New York does so well when it isn't trying too hard. Exposed brick, live music on Sundays, and a Guinness poured with real care - a proper local in a city that doesn't always do proper locals.

Bulman Pub

Perched above the harbour in Summercove, Kinsale, The Bulman is the kind of pub that makes you want to cancel your plans and stay the afternoon. The Guinness is excellent, the views are better, and the whole place has the easy, unhurried quality that the best Irish pubs do without even trying.

Kitty O'Sheas

Four floors of Irish hospitality in the heart of Glasgow City Centre, Kitty O'Shea's is the kind of place that earns its reputation through sheer commitment to a good night. The Guinness is well-kept, the whisky bar is worth exploring, and the live music makes it very easy to lose track of time.

Little Shamrock

Open at the same location in San Francisco since 1893, The Little Shamrock wears its history lightly - a no-frills neighbourhood bar that has outlasted trends, renovations and the rest of it by simply being exactly what it is. The Guinness is good, the atmosphere is better, and an evening here has a habit of running longer than planned.
