20 London pubs worth giving your Sunday to. Book ahead, wear something with an elastic waist.
The Sunday roast is a simple proposition that most places get slightly wrong. The potatoes are soft. The gravy is thin. The Yorkshire arrives looking like it has had a long week.
The twenty below get it right. Some keep things classic. Others run the format through a Chinese larder, a Scottish one or a listening bar's hi-fi. All of them are worth crossing the city for, which on a Sunday is saying something.

Squash, game, the first proper apples. October is when the kitchen starts earning its keep.
Summer cooking is assembly. Slice a tomato, add salt, take the credit. October asks a little more of you. The oven goes back on, the pans get heavier, and things are allowed to take their time.
The reward is a month of genuine abundance. Here is what to buy, what to do with it, and what to cook this weekend.

What's in Season: October

Spend a few minutes with Dee Rettali, Founder of Fortitude Bakehouse and you quickly sense that baking, for her, is rooted in instinct, memory and place. Raised in rural North Cork, surrounded by farmland and seasonal produce, she grew up learning to bake from her mother and grandmother - soda breads, jams and apple pies made simply and well.
After moving to London in the late 80s, Dee found her calling in professional baking, eventually founding Fortitude Bakehouse, now known for its nostalgic, craft-led bakes. Here, she reflects on Irish food traditions, instinctive baking and the flavours that still define home.

St Patrick’s Day with Dee

Most kitchens don’t suffer from a lack of tools. They suffer from too many. Drawers full of gadgets that promised ease and delivered clutter. Cupboards stacked with things that felt essential once, then quietly fell out of rotation. The idea of kitchen essentials has been diluted by listicles and checklists. But when you strip it back, the essentials are simple: the objects you reach for every day, the ones that make cooking feel smoother, calmer, more intuitive. The ones that earn their place. This is a guide to kitchen essentials that actually get used - not aspirational, not excessive, just thoughtfully chosen pieces that support real life in the kitchen.

Kitchen Essentials That Actually Get Used

Put the kettle on and spend five minutes with Tessa Faulkner, the woman behind one of West London’s most beloved neighbourhood spots, Layla Bakery.
What began as a personal longing for an East-London-style bakery closer to home became a lockdown-born idea that grew into Layla: a place defined by craft, comfort and connection. She shares the inspirations behind her seasonal baking, the stories from her kitchen table, and the simple rituals that shape her life in and out of the bakery.

Put the kettle on and spend five minutes with chef Abby Lee (@abby_lee_chef), whose cooking is a love letter to her Malaysian roots and the power of food to heal. After burning out and finding herself back home during lockdown, Abby rediscovered the bold, soulful flavours of her childhood through her aunt’s kitchen and it changed everything. Now, at her London restaurant Mambow, she’s bringing that same heart and heat to the table: smoky gula melaka–laced desserts, punchy curries, and dishes that balance memory with modern flair. Abby talks about finding her voice through food, the joy of reconnecting with her heritage, and why cooking still grounds her like nothing else.

Put the kettle on and spend five minutes with Olivia Cavalli (@olivia_cavalli), the chef, food stylist, and writer whose debut cookbook Stagioni is a heartfelt ode to the rhythm of the seasons, and to her Italian roots. Olivia’s approach to food is steeped in instinct and tradition, inspired by her beloved Nonna who taught her that cooking is less about rules and more about feeling - “a little bit of this, a little bit of that.” Olivia shares how her heritage continues to shape her cooking, from the reverence for ingredients and seasonality to the joy of preserving family recipes. She talks about finding creativity in the ebb and flow of her multifaceted career, the comfort of a simple bowl of pasta, and the enduring legacy of her Nonna’s “Piggy” - a stuffed cabbage dish that holds generations of love in every bite.

Put the kettle on and spend five minutes with Georgie Mullen (@georgieeats), whose debut cookbook What to Cook & When to Cook It celebrates cooking with the seasons. Georgie’s journey began at 14, when she started cooking for her mum, who had early-onset Alzheimer’s. What began as necessity grew into joy, guided by well-thumbed recipe books and a curiosity for flavour. Since 2018, Georgie has shared her recipes online, building a loyal community, cookery classes, and now her first book—rooted in food that’s modern, generous, relaxed, and full of memory.

Pistachio green is the interior design trend that whispers luxury while feeling effortlessly fresh. Softer than emerald, more intriguing than sage, this versatile shade slips easily into home décor without demanding attention - yet always draws the eye. Pair this soothing colour palette with warm neutrals for calm, or with chrome and glass for a sharper mood. Whether as a statement vase, lamp, or linen accent, pistachio interiors bring quiet vitality to any room.

This month, Art Kiosk becomes something closer to a monthly long-form editorial. Original art and prints from artists we rate - we've worked out the frames, decided where each one earns its wall, and picked out what's trending in the art world right now.
There's a mini interview with one artist each month too. This time it's Molly Kayll, on painting to a 90s romcom and the one piece she'll never sell.
Original art, considered properly.
