Hot Takes is a new monthly series on the things that make life better. Our creative director, Laura Jackson, lends her lens to a tightly edited selection of what’s worth knowing about. This week: Condiments.

Laura Jackson's Hot Takes: Condiments

Dan Crow, CEO, on Forest Gate & Leytonstone
I've lived in E7 for coming up on eight years, pretty much bang on the border of Forest Gate and Leytonstone, which is my excuse for being greedy and doing both. When I moved here, before the Elizabeth line, there was nothing. Now we have some great pubs, a wine bar that does coffee and bakes in the morning, and Tuesday night jazz above a social club.
The community and the green space were always here, and the housing stock is lovely, for the most part. I can walk or run for hours on Wanstead Flats without seeing a road.
Everything below are places I actually go.

Interiors people have a name for it: the unexpected red theory. Take a calm, considered room and add a single red object that has no business being there. A lamp. A vase. A tin of tomatoes left out on purpose. It works because it shouldn’t. The eye goes to it first, and the rest of the room looks more intentional.

The café is the one part of a museum nobody was obliged to make beautiful. It exists because people get tired, and for a century most institutions treated it accordingly. A counter by the cloakroom, a tray, a scone under plastic. The ones worth crossing a city for were built on the opposite assumption: that the room where you stop should be as considered as the rooms you came to see. Here are 8 of the most beautiful.

Whether you’re refreshing the table with a new set of napkins or upgrading your toast with a butter dish, here’s our breakfast tableware edit. Think egg cups for slow mornings, side plates for your croissant, and bowls made for yoghurt, granola, and fruit. Add glass coasters, salt and pepper shakers, and gingham table linens and the little extras that pull it all together.

A kitchen reset rarely starts with a moodboard. It starts with a quiet irritation: the drawer that never shuts properly, the mug you don’t actually like drinking from, the counter that somehow feels busy even when it’s clean. The kitchen is the most used room in the house - and often the least thoughtfully edited.
The Glassette kitchen reset isn’t about a full renovation or chasing trends. It’s about pausing, reassessing, and making small, tactile changes that improve how the room feels and functions. A better spatula. Fewer things on show. One beautiful object that earns its place. Done well, a kitchen reset makes everyday cooking calmer - and that calm adds up.

Design isn’t only about how things look - it’s about how they make us feel. The texture of ceramics, the weight of fabrics, the play of light across a room. Design for the Senses is an exploration of atmosphere and detail: pieces that engage touch, scent, and sound to create a home that feels alive. Considered pieces, made with integrity, that invite a slower, more tactile way of living.

Sagittarius season (November 22 – December 21) invites adventure, expansion, and discovery.
Represented by the archer, Sagittarians are guided by curiosity, optimism, and an unshakable quest for truth. They are drawn to experiences and objects that spark freedom, exploration, and meaning - things that open the mind and broaden horizons.
