Yas On The Internet

TV producer & our current favourite person to follow on instagram, @yasontheinternet talks us through the tapestry of everyday things that make up her beautiful life at home.

How do you start your days at home?

Absolute first thing is making my bed, it’s a must! I just don’t think it’s a good start to the day if it isn’t made exactly how I like it. Then a lovely hot shower followed by a coffee or matcha. My partner Dan thinks it’s hilarious to hand it to me whilst I’m in the shower, I think that’s the best start to his day haha.

How would you describe your interiors aesthetic?

Sadly the beautiful home I’m in is rented and not of my own design. It’s an old painter's factory so has some incredible original features including the huge wooden pillars that run throughout the house. It’s very industrial, which is fab, and I’ll deffo be taking inspiration from it for my future home. I think, like my style, it will be fairly androgynous, taking bits and bobs from other aesthetics. I would like different rooms to have a different energy so I can find solace in each one, according to my mood. But there will definitely be a central thread of dark wood. I will say though, whenever I go into a spa I always say to myself, “God I could live here!” So...imagine ambient lighting and lots of incense!

If your home was a fictional character who would it be and why?

What a bloody brilliant question! I’ve been watching a lot of Doctor Who recent and I do think the house is like a TARDIS as everyone is always so shocked at how much bigger it feels on the inside, and when you’re inside you do kind of forget you’re in London! It’s peaceful and filled with different textures and comfy seats and plants.

Tell us about your favourite corner of your home?

Favourite corner is probably the armchair in the living room as it’s right by the fire (and phone charger haha). This spot hits different in the colder months! A very close second is the armchairs by the record player as it’s in the dining room you get to chuck on some music and still chat to whoever is in the house, but spiders also love that corner so I get too spooked to sit down for too long!

What does it feel like to get home after a trip?

Ohhhh there’s no feeling like it. Knowing that everything is as you left it. Fresh sheets! Your own shower! A gooood cup of tea. Unbeatable feeling.

What does home offer you that you don't get anywhere else?

My wardrobe. That’s the worst part about travelling/ leaving home, I can’t figure out what to wear or how much to pack. It’s a nightmare every time. 23kg is never enough for me, but it sets a good and necessary boundary for me!

If you've been away on a trip and you get home, what are the first three things you can't wait to do?

The kettle is whacked straight on. A takeaway is probably ordered but depending on where I’ve been I’m often craving some greens/veg so I’ll cook a stir fry or whip up a chicken salad. Final stop is the sofa to catch up on whatever show I’ve missed since I was away. Big BIG priorities.

What's your advice for creating a home that reflects your personality rather than follows trends?

Oh it’s so tricky to not follow trends, but, like my clothes, if I see an item of clothing that is popular at the moment, that I love I wait for the trend to slowly pass and if after that time I’m still thinking about that item, knowing that I can style it and look at it forever, it goes straight in my basket - it’s probably discounted at that point too! But when it comes to styling as long as your actual love, passion and personality comes through and you’ve not just painted everything white/neutral, you’re off to a good start. I think artwork and knick-knacks are such an easy and small way to add personally to a home! Charity shops are fab for interesting glassware!

QUICK FIRE

Soundtrack to your home: Atm I’m playing Haim’s Days Are Gone album. I got their 10th Anniversary vinyl and I just love to play it whilst I’m cooking.

We're coming round for dinner, what will you cook us?: Garlic, Ginger, Chilli & Soy chicken with a Miso and sesame salad. Finishing up with a Custardo.

What's a strange ritual/routine you have at home that might surprise people?: I love to brush my teeth in the shower just gets everything out the way at once!

Most prized possession: My giant thumb ring. It was given to my mum from her god mother and now I have it!

You can swap houses with anyone in the world, who do you choose and why?: Troye Sivan, I watched his Architectural Digest interview and was mesmerised.  The ambient lighting, the curved cave-like, dark walls of his bathroom and the massive windows. Just divine.

A scent that makes you think of home: Anything with strong Vetiver notes. That’s home to me, with Dan.

An object from home that you take with you on trips: My bonnet, now I’ve started to grow my hair after 8 gorgeous years!
