The Nostalgia of Bobbin Homewares

Similarly to fashion trend cycles we see come, go and eventually repeat through the decades, the world of interiors is not so dissimilar. The latest resurgence in interior design? Bobbin furniture.

The 17th century trend originated in Northern Europe and was most commonly seen on the spindles or legs of furniture, emulating the look of a bobbin or spool and adding a feeling of decadence to otherwise plain furniture. Bobbin adornments epitomise the beauty of decoration, adding ornamental flourishes within the home in a way that feels immediately inviting, draws focus and creates an artful layer to any room.

The resurgence of the bobbin trend sits hand in hand alongside that of Cottagecore (an aesthetic that celebrates simple living, particularly in the countryside), romanticising the joy of being at home and the little flourishes and details that show care and express character. The traditional feel of the Bobbin trend naturally complements this trend.

From statement mirrors, chest of drawers, bedside tables and bed frames too, bobbin furniture brings nostalgia, design flair and layers of interest that can really elevate your space.

For a subtle injection of the trend that can be placed in any room, Alfred Newall’s bobbin mirrors and lamp bases offer a beautiful injection of tradition in a way that feels perfectly at home in 2023. His work is inspired by “historic vernacular furniture and its place within contemporary interior”, utilising sustainably sourced materials and traditional methods to create beautiful pieces that perfectly balance antique appeal with a modern day flourish.

For a more playful take on this traditional trend, Bertola Home Studio’s bobbin frames are one for lovers of injecting individuality into their space. Founded by Poppy Bertola in January 2022, each bobbin frame is handcrafted in Poppy’s home attic-studio, in West Yorkshire. Poppy applies each individual bobbin to the (locally made) solid wood frame, before hand-painting and finishing them in a glossy lacquer. Poppy's frames give a stylish and bold finish to our curation of original art and prints on Glassette.

Embracing the beauty of the bobbin trend in 2023 can be achieved in both subtle and overt ways, and is one of particular note for design lovers who seek out showstopping furniture. Whilst its origins are rooted in traditional design, the colourful and lacquered updates to the trend offer a new and exciting personality for the humble bobbin design.
