How the Glassette team refreshes for Autumn

September doesn't ask permission. The light goes early, the diary fills up, and everyone starts talking about soup. Some of us find this cheering. Others are still quietly mourning August. Either way the response tends to be the same, which is a bit of shuffling about at home: a candle lit for the first time since May, new bedding, the blanket that lives on the sofa for the next six months.

So we asked the team what they're bringing in this season. Below, the small and specific things making the handover from summer to autumn feel less like an ending.

Liz - Partnerships

September always feels like a bit of a reset for me. I love getting back into a routine after summer and finally tackling all those little jobs I’ve been meaning to do but was too busy over the summer. This autumn I’m determined to sort through all our photos and actually get some of them framed and up on the walls, as well as getting organised for the new school/work routine. Then it’s the cosy stuff I love, stocking up on candles, getting the PJs back out and making home feel warm and cosy as the evenings start drawing in.

Anna - Head of Creative

September always gets to me. I'm a summer girl at heart, and I still get the back-to-school scaries despite not having been at school for a very long time. This year it's worse, because I'm turning thirty and that has thrown me more than I expected. So the plan is to make home the calm bit. A candle is the obvious place to start - I miss lighting one over summer, and sage from Flamingo Estate is my new favourite. Next to that, I love my chickpea hot water bottle, which I'd happily own in every colourway but I’m especially into this one at the moment. I've been after new cotton bedding for a while, and I love this colour combination and pattern from TBCo. And because I am, as established, a summer girl, I'll be spending the darker evenings making a photobook from recent holidays. The whole new Papier collection is good, but this one is my fav.

Elsie - Editorial Intern

I prepare for autumn by getting excited about the bits I actually like rather than mourning summer. Getting darker earlier doesn’t mean the day needs to end earlier, and I’m determined not to become someone who uses it as an excuse to stay in. I’ve been going back through things I’ve saved over the last few months and remembering everything I wanted to do, buy and make, which has resulted in a fairly long list. It’s also got me thinking about colour. I keep coming back to burgundy with blue. The burgundy feels right for this time of year, and the blue keeps it feeling fresh. I’m looking forward to cooking more with what’s in season too. We have a local shop, Trindle Stores, which always has great fresh produce. I’m very ready for figs to come back, and I’ve already saved a fig and walnut porridge loaf from @boroughchef that I want to make. Fresh bedding is another September job, as is having friends round for dinner more often. I’ve also got a very nice mug from Service Projects waiting patiently for its autumn debut. The raincoat, unfortunately, is still missing.

Autumn brings about fresh starts and always feels like the rightful new year. We’ve usually started bigger house projects at the beginning of the new season, from ripping out old bathrooms to digging out parts of the garden to start anew, ready for planting bulbs in October. I’ll be adding more warmth and texture into our living spaces with little touches like a colourful lamp and cozy blanket. Spending more time indoors with the changing weather is grounding when home becomes a focus once again.

There's something so satisfying about refreshing your space with the seasons, and with a move coming up, now feels like the perfect moment to switch things around. I'm the same with my wardrobe, swapping jumpers in and out with the weather, and it turns out cushions work the same way in my bedroom. I've got a rotation going - heavy cotton covers for spring, linen through summer, and for autumn, Chickpea's lambswool ones. They're soft, squishy, and exactly what you want when you're crawling into bed earlier than you'd like to admit.

My print wall is next on the list - I've got my eye on frames from All The Things, and if I'm going seasonal, I'm going seasonal properly: the 'beetroot' colourway it is. A new room also calls for a new side table situation, which means a new trinket dish is non-negotiable - Joanna Ling's has that pearl effect that makes even loose earrings and odd studs look like they're meant to be there.

And no fresh start is complete without a fresh scent. The lime, basil and mandarin candle from Domestic Science Home is already earmarked as my new go-to - it's a scent I'd happily drink in a cocktail, so it felt only right it should fill the new room too.

Grace - Social Media Manager

Every autumn, I have a few non-negotiables that help set the season. First up: a big wardrobe clear out. There are always some well loved pieces quite literally hanging on by a thread, so to make the process slightly less painful, I’ve decided it’s finally time to replace all my mismatched hangers with Mustard Made’s Hangers in Blush.

Next on the list is spending more time cooking and baking. I’m no master chef, but with more cosy nights in on the horizon, I’m determined to up my game. I’m thinking a few new cookbooks, plus some steel bowls from Service Projects, should do the trick.

And, naturally, nothing delicious is complete without something good to watch. A spooky film or an episode of Gilmore Girls is usually my choice, preferably curled up under a new blanket. The Colours of Arley wool blanket is currently top of my list, I’m obsessed with the stripes and contrast stitching.

Anna - Marketing Director

Firstly, I love the smell of Autumn in the air and even as a 34 year old mum I still think of Gilmore Girls when I think of Autumn. How long is it since I rewatched the whole series, two or three years? Probably time for a rewatch. And I rewatch it and wonder why I like it so much... The interiors are generally not my style, and I don't love over the top seasonal decorations (am I Luke?). But actually I really love marking the change of seasons, just in a more subtle way.

So what am I doing? Evening routines are BACK. Baby to bed (fingers crossed), hearty warming food (big Meera Sodha fan), maybe a glass of something with my AMBAR glass charms, which are both so unnecessary and so necessary. Then mark the wind down: a book, TV, or painting and drawing. Also very late to the party but learning so much about art from Fake or Fortune! I think I might now be old. Bath with Pelegrims bath salts and my TEKLA robe, a deeply moisturising skincare routine, ROCCO eye masks, then 10pm bed (earlier if possible). It's a time for routine and calm for me.

I'm also ridiculously excited to go pumpkin picking with my daughter for the first time...
