Flo Dill

DJ and gardener Flo Dill (@flollid) invites us into the gentle rhythm of her days - between morning radio shows, sunlit afternoons in the kitchen, and quiet hours at the allotment. In our latest interview, she shares her go-to planting rituals, the bliss of bird-filled silence, proud pea harvests, and the album that’s soundtracking her slow evenings at home.

What’s your go-to album for when you’re pottering around the house?

At the moment I’m listening to this beautiful album by Wilson Tanner a lot. They’re an Australian duo who have made this kind of ambient hazy instrumental guitar record: it’s perfect for an evening in. It’s called Legends.

And when you're out in the garden - do you have a planting soundtrack?

Usually when I’m gardening it’s at my allotment, and I tend to do that quietly, or very occasionally I’ll put a podcast on. But generally I’m enjoying that time without any background noise - I spend so much time listening to music that it can be really blissful to switch it off. I like the accompaniment of the birds and the noise from nearby houses of people living their lives, or when school gets let out and you hear all the kids running past - it’s really nice.

What’s your favourite time of day in your home?

I love the afternoon the most. I love coming home at about 3 or 4, having done my radio show in the morning, and the sun hits my little garden and the kitchen just perfectly. Mornings for me are quite busy and work focused - I’m up early and doing last minute show prep and then running out to do the show - so afternoons are when I can switch off and relax.

Are there any songs that instantly remind you of home?

Sarah by Thin Lizzy! I don’t really know why.

What’s your proudest harvest moment?

My dad and I grew the best peas we ever grew in the summer of 2024: we had previously had some bad pea luck, but then that summer we had 3 metre high plants that were producing such good peas: it was the best. I love fresh peas.

What does gardening offer you that nothing else quite does?

It is ego less and completely divorced from me, in a way - quite a lot of my job now is about me, and things I say or songs I play - and nobody should be thinking about themselves that much. It’s not healthy! Gardening takes me outside of myself, and is a very humbling experience too sometimes.

What would be your go-to for planting in June?

Sweetcorn! I just planted some red corn that I’m really excited for. I plant mine a bit early indoors, but you can sow it in June ideally. Fresh corn is amazing.
