The paper's warm tan colour comes from natural dye made using bark from ancient oak trees, often over 500 years old, that have died naturally. This intricate process, perfected through trial and error, creates this unique hue. The photo shows the exact tree used for the dye. The oak has long been revered across cultures as a symbol of strength, endurance, and wisdom. In Celtic tradition, it's the "king of the forest," linked to Druids and spiritual rituals. In Norse mythology, it was sacred to Thor and seen as protective. Using this natural oak dye connects us and honours the deep-rooted history, and cultural significance of these amazing trees.
In Japanese, "momigami" means "kneaded paper," a technique that strengthens ordinary paper using Devil's tongue root and hand kneading. This process gives the paper a unique, leather-like texture. In Japan and Korea, paper is valued not as disposable but as a durable, valuable material, traditionally used for clothing called kamiko, a slowly fading art form.
This paper used for this technique is handmade Japanese Kozo paper from sustainably harvested mulberry bark, which doesn’t harm the plant. The quality paper diffuses light beautifully, creating a soft glow that conceals the light source.
