Hot Takes is a new monthly series on the things that make life better. Our creative director, Laura Jackson’s lends her lens on a tightly edited selection of what’s worth knowing about. First up: Bags Made for Living.

Laura Jackson’s Hot Takes: Carry Your Life

July, you've been a lot - but in a good way. Busy doesn't quite cover it, but here's what's stuck with me this month.
A reading room stocked entirely with queer literature, tucked inside an Aesop store. A cabbage (yes, a cabbage) baked and frosted until it passes for a cake. A cosy, intimate dark in Fitzrovia that's somehow fully booked on a random Thursday.
But the one that's properly stayed with me, a shoe shop in Shoreditch, about to go under, saved overnight because the owner's daughter put it on TikTok and the whole neighbourhood turned up for it. Community, doing what it does best.
So that's my July edit, a bit of design, a bit of food, a bit of "support your local shop or lose it." Exactly as a July edit should be.

What Inspired Me This Month

A pairing that earns its keep through proximity rather than contrast, apricot and coral work because neither is trying to win. Two tones from the same warm family, close enough to feel considered, different enough to hold interest - the blush of apricot softening the deeper flush of coral's red undertow.
Apricot does the quiet work. Diffused, flattering, the colour of late afternoon in a room with good light. Coral sharpens the mood without breaking it, adding just enough depth to stop the combination reading as sweet. Together they feel less like a pairing and more like a progression, a colour story that rewards looking twice.

Our weekly Nice Things Edit is a curated Monday round-up of what we’re loving right now. From our favourite pieces on Glassette to a recipe, a watch, a read, a place to visit, a restaurant, and a gift worth bookmarking.
Each week, every member of the Glassette team shares their current favourites, whether that’s new arrivals, pieces we’ve spotted trending, or timeless finds we can’t stop thinking about. Think of it as a weekly dose of joy, discovery, and design inspiration, handpicked by the Glassette team.

Nice Things This Week

Some houses take years to get right. Where We'd Stay is a new series from Glassette where we ask the people behind exceptional places to stay - hotels, villas, houses, the occasional very good Airbnb - to walk us through what they made and why.
We're starting in Suffolk, at Melton Hall: a Grade II listed Georgian house on the edge of Woodbridge, sleeping up to 17, with a pool that (according to everyone involved) stops people in their tracks. It was three years in the making - a collaboration between Cassandra Stavrou, founder of Proper Snacks, and her longtime friend and interior designer Rebecca Sicardi, who spent those years sourcing art and furniture from independent dealers, avoiding big brands entirely, and commissioning two oak tables from a single fallen tree on the grounds.
Each instalment covers one property, question by question - the design decisions, the nearby spots worth knowing about, and the one thing guests always comment on. Places we'd genuinely stay. Starting here.

Where We'd Stay

The right ceramics change a table entirely. Not in a curated, every-element-considered way - but in the quieter sense that a well-made bowl or a frilled candlestick can make everything around it feel more deliberate.
Whether they taught themselves through grief, channelled two decades of fashion industry expertise into clay, or found their way to a wheel somewhere between a career pivot and a lockdown, Britain's makers share a certain sensibility: handmade but not precious, expressive but not loud. These are the ten makers whose work we keep returning to - and whose pieces are increasingly hard to get hold of once the drops go live.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is finally here, and we're taking the OG characters and imagining the homes they'd live in. So, which one are you?

Devil Wears Prada Characters

There's a particular kind of magic that happens when a table spills over. Not messily, not by accident, but deliberately. Glasses catching the light, platters stacked high and passed without ceremony, chairs pulled in from other rooms because you needed them. This is XXL hosting: expansive, generous, and quietly theatrical in the best possible way.
It starts as a mindset shift. Forget tightly controlled dinner parties and overly curated place settings. This is about leaning into abundance - of food, of people, of texture, of noise. Long, meandering tables instead of perfectly appointed individual covers. Sharing plates over plated courses. A room that feels lived-in and evolving rather than dressed for a shoot.

XXL Hosting

A classic colour pairing that harmonises in all the right ways, chocolate and duck egg are understated by design. A rich, velvety brown meets a soft, chalky blue-green - earthy warmth against cool calm.
Chocolate brings depth and grounding, while duck egg brings quiet freshness and a touch of the unexpected. Together, they complement each other effortlessly, creating a look that feels timeless, considered, and quietly confident.

Chocolate & Duck Egg

Spend five minutes with Rachel Ama and you’re immediately pulled into her world, one where food is generous, sauce-led and rooted in feeling. For Rachel, Mother’s Day isn’t about a polite brunch or a single showstopper dish, it’s about abundance. Think slow-cooked butterbeans, citrusy chermoula, soft sourdough slicked with avocado and lemon salt, chocolate mousse with olive oil, and tables dotted with figs and berries, a feast designed to make mum feel truly spoilt.
In this conversation, Rachel reflects on the dishes that shaped her, the quiet power of intention when cooking for someone you love, and how becoming a mother herself has deepened her understanding of care. From pistachio lemon loaf as a fail-safe crowd-pleaser to suya-spiced oyster mushrooms made for sharing, she reminds us that celebratory food should be joyful, flavour-packed and made with heart - never worthy, never restrained, always abundant.

Cooking for Mother's Day

A deli dinner is the easiest way to host well without cooking. This Glassette guide explains what to serve, how to set the table, and how to make a no-cook dinner feel intentional rather than thrown together. From smart sourcing to relaxed presentation, this is modern hosting done properly.

For this Best of Lighting edit, we’re focusing on pieces that do more than just illuminate, they set the mood. Think soft, warm glows balanced with cleaner, clearer light: lighting that feels comforting.
The best designs strike that sweet spot between atmosphere and function. Together, they create spaces that feel considered, calm, and quietly uplifting. From sculptural pendants to understated table lamps, each piece has been chosen for its ability to elevate a room without overpowering it.

Best of Lighting

If Pantone’s Colour of the Year set the baseline, consider these its brighter counterparts.
Looking to SS26 fashion as an early reference point, interiors appear to be moving in the same direction: colour with more presence, less noise. Grape, Fuchsia, Lime and Flame Orange are saturated but considered, bringing depth, warmth and a lift to the home. Used as a single statement or paired for contrast, they’re the shades we’re watching for 2026.

The best serving bowls do more than hold food - they shape how a table looks, feels and functions. From ideal sizes and materials to common mistakes and smart buying tips, this Glassette guide explains why serving bowls matter more than plates, and how to choose versatile, design-led pieces that work for everyday dinners and effortless hosting.

The Best Serving Bowls

This week’s moodboard takes its cue from the McCallister family home in Home Alone - a place where Christmas is turned all the way up, from the moment Kevin is left in charge. Think glowing lights, generous colour, busy rooms and that unmistakable feeling of a house ready for chaos, comfort and celebration in equal measure. We’ve chosen rich tones, cosy textures and festive details that capture the warmth and nostalgia of the film, reimagined for a home that feels welcoming, layered and lived in.

Creating the magic of a great restaurant at home is easier than you think, says Alfie Steiner - and it has far less to do with elaborate dishes than with warmth, intention and atmosphere. From soft lighting and gentle background jazz to simple, reliable menus and thoughtful little touches, Alfie’s approach shows how anyone can make their home feel welcoming, relaxed and effortlessly special for guests. This guide breaks down his best tips for becoming a restaurateur in your own home.

How to be a Restaurateur

This month’s colour pairing brings together Apple and Sorbet - a crisp green and a delicate, sorbet pink. Apple evokes freshness, clarity, and a sense of renewal, while Sorbet introduces a gentle warmth and soft sweetness. Together, they create a perfectly balanced palette that feels bright yet calming, confident yet approachable. It’s a pairing that captures the energy of new beginnings and the optimism of longer day, a reminder that small bursts of colour can shift a space, a mood, and even the rhythm of your day.

Apple & Sorbet Edit

This Christmas, we’re setting the scene for gatherings big and small. From glassware that catches the light, to sculptural candleholders and table linens made for lingering evenings - our festive homewares edit brings warmth and wonder to every corner of your celebrations.
Think flickering candles, the scent of something sweet in the oven, and the comforting hum of conversation around the table. Thoughtfully curated to elevate your hosting rituals, these are pieces to treasure long after the last song fades.
A celebration of comfort, nostalgia, and the joy of time well spent!
