Rory Langdon-Down is an award winning filmmaker and photographer from London. His primary focus is capturing the beauty within the seemingly ordinary using a cinematic approach to photography. Rory's background in documentary film can be seen in how he approaches stills keeping storytelling at the centre of all his work. He is a winner of Portrait of Britain, Portrait of Humanity and has been shortlisted for both the Royal Photographic Society's International Photography Exhibition and the Taylor Wessing Prize at the National Portrait Gallery.

Nice Things This Week

The second in our neighbourhood guide series - this time our Head of Creative Anna on Highbury.
​I walk everywhere. That's the whole thing, really. I'll add twenty minutes to a journey to avoid going underground, and in Highbury I almost never have to - the park, the high street, the good pubs, the shops I actually use, all of it is on foot from my front door.
It helps that there's genuinely somewhere to walk to. I'd say the best restaurants and pubs in London are within a mile of here, which I know sounds like the kind of thing everyone says about their own postcode, but I'll stand behind it.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the things that quietly inspire you without making a huge song and dance about it.
Not necessarily the big, life-changing moments. More the restaurant you leave already planning your return to before the bill’s even arrived. A book that makes disappearing from society feel oddly glamorous. A hotel suite so layered and atmospheric you briefly convince yourself you could move to Rome and spend your days sketching in cafés. Those sorts of things.
The things that shift your mood slightly. Make you want to host more. Cook differently. Book the trip. Rearrange a room. Romanticise your life a little bit harder.
I suppose that’s always what I’m drawn to in the end - places and people and ideas that make everyday life feel more considered, more beautiful, more alive.
So here’s a little collection of what’s inspired me lately. A bit interiors, a bit food, a bit escapism. Exactly as it should be.

In 1967, architect Junzo Yoshimura designed the Shonan-Chigasaki House - a quiet landmark of Japanese modernism, where clean lines and soft light frame views of the sea. Nearly sixty years on, its spirit lives on in a sky-blue carpet, originally custom-made for the home and recently revived by @yamagatadantsu from the archives.
The carpet’s return is more than a restoration - it is a dialogue across generations, a preservation of Yoshimura’s vision and a reminder that modernism was always about more than form. It was about feeling. About atmosphere. About the way a single color can hold the memory of a place.
