Nice Things This Week

The shell has spent decades being filed under "holiday souvenir" and not much else. That's over. Scalloped edges are turning up on lamps and mirror frames, mantelpieces are swapping their usual ceramics for conch and clam, and entire chandeliers are now being built from them - somewhere between a cabinet of curiosities and a beach house, minus the sand. It helps that the appeal was never really in question: no two shells the same, no improvement required. This isn't a coastal trend so much as good taste finally catching up with something the sea got right first.

With a heatwave on the horizon, the pièce de résistance is the Summer Solstice. If you've found yourself thinking the sun's been hanging around a little longer lately, you'd be right – it's the longest day of the year, with more daylight than any other. In Mexico, crowds gather at Chichén Itzá to see the ancient sun-drenched El Castillo pyramid, while in Austria, huge bonfires light up the Alps as communities come together to usher in the year's longest day.
Whether you're joining an age-old tradition or just enjoying an extra few hours in the garden, it’s well worth joining in on the celebrations.
