Good renovation advice is almost always retrospective. You have to make the mistakes first. Room by Room is Glassette's series in which we ask designers and homeowners to walk us through their spaces: what wasn't working, what they spent too much on (and whether it was worth it), and what they'd tell you before you pick up a sledgehammer.
For the latest instalment of Room by Room, we spoke to Patricia Rodi, founder of interior design studio Rodi Cécile, about the renovation of her 1860 Victorian villa. Previous owners had over-modernised it, with lowered ceilings hiding the original cornicing, blocked-up fireplaces, and open-plan spaces that left rooms darker rather than brighter. Since then the house has slowly been returned to itself: fourteen rooms reworked to hold family life and two working studios under one roof.
Three years in, with four rooms still to go, the project has had its share of surprises. There were builders' bills inflated by a remote location, fireplaces that cost far more than expected, and a boiler that gave up five days after moving in. Along the way, she learned to live with an old house before making big decisions and to protect original character wherever possible, because, in her words, "you can destroy a century of work in a few seconds".
From reinstated fireplaces and warm pools of lamplight to a kitchen repainted from muted green to brown-red, Patricia takes us through the decisions, splurges and lessons behind a home designed to feel as though it evolved over generations.

The most interesting rooms of the season weren't decorated, they were collected. New pieces sit along vintage forms, inherited proportions with furniture and textiles that are layer and loved. A collected room is never finished, and it isn't trying to be.

In the heart of London sits a slice of Iran in restaurant form. Persian decor adorns the interior of Berenjak Mayfair, which opened its doors earlier this year. It's described as "busy, buzzy and intimate" by Jake Raslan and Lorenzo Buscaroli, the minds behind the interiors – and we're inclined to agree.
With an expansive budget, the pair were able to bring to life stunning details, from a hand-painted ceiling by a specialist decorative artist, inspired by historic Persian miniatures, to bespoke marble mosaic floors in the toilets and elegantly draped curtains. The devil is truly in the detail when it comes to the Mayfair dining spot.
An endeavour that took more than a year to complete, a great deal of time, sweat, bespoke tiles and love were clearly poured into the space. On the food front, guests are treated to an immersive experience, with a kitchen that spills into the dining space, allowing them to watch stone-baked bread and smoked meats being prepared in real time.
We caught up with the brains behind the project to uncover the most expensive details, why handmade craftsmanship really is worth the investment, and whether they have any regrets.

The shell has spent decades being filed under "holiday souvenir" and not much else. That's over. Scalloped edges are turning up on lamps and mirror frames, mantelpieces are swapping their usual ceramics for conch and clam, and entire chandeliers are now being built from them - somewhere between a cabinet of curiosities and a beach house, minus the sand. It helps that the appeal was never really in question: no two shells the same, no improvement required. This isn't a coastal trend so much as good taste finally catching up with something the sea got right first.

Some houses take years to get right. Where We'd Stay is a new series from Glassette where we ask the people behind exceptional places to stay - hotels, villas, houses, the occasional very good Airbnb - to walk us through what they made and why.
We're starting in Suffolk, at Melton Hall: a Grade II listed Georgian house on the edge of Woodbridge, sleeping up to 17, with a pool that (according to everyone involved) stops people in their tracks. It was three years in the making - a collaboration between Cassandra Stavrou, founder of Proper Snacks, and her longtime friend and interior designer Rebecca Sicardi, who spent those years sourcing art and furniture from independent dealers, avoiding big brands entirely, and commissioning two oak tables from a single fallen tree on the grounds.

What started as a small, dingy space became a warm, light-filled room designed to do everything at once: cook, work, host, and connect seamlessly to the garden beyond.
Twelve months in the making, the project came with its share of surprises - deeper foundations, escalating construction costs, and the occasional challenge of being, in Corey's words, a "tyrannical perfectionist". Along the way, she learned the value of trusting contractors, following instinct when choosing materials, and investing in the elements that shape a room's atmosphere.
