Art Kiosk October

Tonight, 12 August, a total solar eclipse crosses Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain. Britain isn't in the path of totality, and never gets the full blackout drama this time round. What we get instead is a partial eclipse, low in the west, right around sunset. That sounds like a consolation prize. It isn't. A sun sliced into a crescent and sinking into the sea is its own kind of spectacle, and the further west and south you are, the more dramatic it looks. Bring eclipse glasses (sunglasses will not do), a clear western horizon, and low expectations of the British weather. Timings shift by several minutes across the country, and the sun sets earlier the further east you are - check local start times and sunset for your exact spot before you head out.

The Best Places in the UK to View the Solar Eclipse

If Pantone’s Colour of the Year set the baseline, consider these its brighter counterparts.
Looking to SS26 fashion as an early reference point, interiors appear to be moving in the same direction: colour with more presence, less noise. Grape, Fuchsia, Lime and Flame Orange are saturated but considered, bringing depth, warmth and a lift to the home. Used as a single statement or paired for contrast, they’re the shades we’re watching for 2026.

2026 Colour Trends

The secret isn’t more lighting, it’s softer lighting, placed with intention, and switched on before the evening goes grey. Boutique hotels have a particular kind of magic. You walk in and everything feels calm. The sofa looks inviting. The corners are warm. Nobody is being blasted by a ceiling light. Even the air seems better lit. And then you get home and your living room is… fine. Technically. But it doesn’t have that low, flattering glow that makes you want to order olives and speak quietly. It’s either dim and a bit sad, or bright in a way that makes you feel like you should be cleaning. The good news is you don’t need to redesign your living room to get that boutique hotel feeling. You just need to borrow their lighting rules - the ones they’ve been quietly perfecting for years.

Light Like a Hotel

When the sun clocks off at 4pm, your home needs a lighting plan and we’ve got just what you need! Winter is when your home starts telling on itself. That chair you love? Suddenly too dark to read in. Your kitchen? Weirdly clinical. Your living room? Technically fine, but somehow not somewhere you want to be. And then there’s the nightly ritual: you finish the last email, it’s pitch-black outside, and you switch on the ceiling light like you’re interrogating yourself. Welcome to the 4pm problem - when winter exposes lighting that was designed for seeing, not living. The fix isn’t complicated. It’s just… softer, warmer, and a little more layered than you think.

Hot Takes is a new monthly series on the things that make life better. Our creative director, Laura Jackson’s lends her lens on a tightly edited selection of what’s worth knowing about. First up: Bags Made for Living.

The drinks matter. The room matters more than anyone likes to admit.
A good bar is a piece of set design. The lighting is low, the seating is arranged so everyone can see everyone else, and the bartender stands where the eye naturally lands. Here are seven rooms that would hold up with the lights on. Nobody has checked.

Nice Things This Week

You spend a third of your life in it and most people choose it in about four minutes. Bedding gets bought in a hurry, usually white, usually because the last set finally gave out. Which is odd, given it's the thing in the house you touch most. The eleven brands in this edit are worth slowing down for: organic cotton in 1970s prints, scalloped percale from Paris, Portuguese-woven sheets designed to be mixed rather than matched, wool blankets from a mill in Leith. Some will change the whole room. Some you'll only notice at 11pm, which is arguably the point. Here's who to save.

11 Bedding Brands to Follow

A desk is the only surface in the house that nobody furnishes on purpose. Everything on it arrived for a reason and none of the reasons were aesthetic: the pen came free, the mug is from a conference, the paper is held down by whatever was nearest. Which is a shame, because it's where a lot of us now spend the hours we used to spend elsewhere. The ten brands here make the things that end up within arm's reach for years: mouth-blown glass paperweights, hand-built trays for the stuff that has nowhere else to go, a diary invented in 1908 to fit inside a breast pocket. None of it will make you work faster. That isn't the job.

10 Deskware Brands to Know

A stationery shop is a good test of a city. These are small businesses with thin margins, kept alive by repeat custom and a particular sort of obsessiveness. The ones that last are usually run by someone who has strong feelings about laid paper and no interest at all in footfall. Here are 8 of the most beautiful.

September arrives and something in us wants a clean page. Not a resolution, exactly - more the low-grade satisfaction of a fresh notebook and a pen that works. The desk gets cleared. The old diary, three months untouched, goes in the drawer. Our collection with Papier is built for this particular itch: notebooks and notecards that look good enough to leave out on the table and are sturdy enough to actually get used. Start with the notebook. The rest tends to follow.

The halls room is a known quantity. Magnolia walls, a single bed, a desk pushed under the window, a radiator with a mind of its own and a ban on anything adhesive. You get it for nine months and you cannot change a thing about it structurally.
What you can change is what you put in it. The list below is not about making a student room look like a shoot. It is about the small number of objects that make a rented box feel like yours by the second week, and that survive the move out, the house share in second year and the flat after that.

18 Things Worth Buying For A New Room At Uni

A lot of what inspired me this week happened around Borough.
A Turkish-Cypriot meyhane on the top floor of a pub, papered wall to wall in someone else's family photographs. A cocktail bar five minutes downhill from it, building drinks out of the market below. A Parisian burger shop in Shoreditch with four things on the menu and a queue that doesn't seem to mind.
But the one I keep thinking about is the Barbican, where every August they put a screen up on the Sculpture Court and let a few hundred people watch films on a concrete terrace in the middle of the City.
So that's the week - two restaurants, a bar, a film season, a museum and three people whose work I've been sitting with. Here's the eight.

8 Things That Inspired Me This Week

Our Co-Founder and Creative Director Laura Jackson rediscovers forgotten Mallorcan treasures.
"Four summer days in Mallorca. We found ourselves there to celebrate a family wedding and in the days following, we set out to find some glittering coves and secret swimming spots, local lunch spots and beautiful ceramics to take home. The south east corner is a part of Mallorca I haven't visited since I was young and I felt all the excitement of rediscovering forgotten treasures and well kept secrets." Laura

Eleanor is Glassette's Buying and Brand Acquisition Manager - the person who sources new homeware and lifestyle brands for the platform, shapes the ranges, and spots what's worth paying attention to before most people have clocked it. Every month, she shares the products she can't stop thinking about, the trends quietly moving into interiors, and honest recommendations she'd genuinely spend her own money on.
This month: the back-to-school dread that ends, as ever, in a new notebook and a house full of primary colours, the frames built around a polaroid strip rather than in spite of it, the tea towels she's decided are too good for the kitchen and has hung on the wall instead, the yoghurt topping the whole office keeps asking about, and the six mirrors doing six entirely different things with the same object.

August Product Diaries

Furniture is the slowest thing you buy. A sofa outlasts a flat, a table gets carried between three addresses and inherited by someone who never asked for it, a locker bought for a kid's room ends up in a studio holding paperwork. So it's worth being deliberate. The 12 brands in this edit make pieces designed to be lived with rather than replaced: concrete cast by hand in a family studio, burl wood shaped by artisans in Southern Italy, plywood cut in a Brighton workshop. Some are loud, some are quiet, all of them are made by people who can tell you where the material came from. Here's who to know.
