Colours of Arley was founded by Louisa Tratalos in her quest to help people find the perfect interior stripe. After discovering how difficult it was to find the ideal stripe, she commissioned a bespoke striped dog bed for her terrier Patch and now invites people to do the same for their furniture, curtains, or cushions. The brand invites home makers to choose any two of the 180 colours from Beer to Mermaid, the size of the stripe (skinny, midi or grand) and the material for their own interior fabric. All fabric is produced to order at the Colours of Arley workshops in Cheshire.

A stationery shop is a good test of a city. These are small businesses with thin margins, kept alive by repeat custom and a particular sort of obsessiveness. The ones that last are usually run by someone who has strong feelings about laid paper and no interest at all in footfall. Here are 8 of the most beautiful.

September doesn't ask permission. The light goes early, the diary fills up, and everyone starts talking about soup. Some of us find this cheering. Others are still quietly mourning August. Either way the response tends to be the same, which is a bit of shuffling about at home: a candle lit for the first time since May, new bedding, the blanket that lives on the sofa for the next six months.
So we asked the team what they're bringing in this season. Below, the small and specific things making the handover from summer to autumn feel less like an ending.

How the Glassette team refreshes for Autumn

Our September Art Kiosk drop is here. Read which frames we'd pair with prints, where we'd hang art, and what's trending in the art world. There's also a mini interview with Rosanna Corfe.

Our weekly Nice Things Edit is a curated Monday round-up of what we’re loving right now. From our favourite pieces on Glassette to a recipe, a watch, a read, a place to visit, a restaurant, and a gift worth bookmarking.
Each week, every member of the Glassette team shares their current favourites, whether that’s new arrivals, pieces we’ve spotted trending, or timeless finds we can’t stop thinking about. Think of it as a weekly dose of joy, discovery, and design inspiration, handpicked by the Glassette team.

Nice Things This Week

The ones worth saving for the last week of August, when the light goes long and everything starts packing itself away.
There is a specific kind of film about the end of summer, and it is not really about summer at all. It is about the afternoon the shutters get closed, the argument that surfaces on the last night, the person who was there in July and is not there in September. These nine understand it.

The second in our neighbourhood guide series - this time our Head of Creative Anna on Highbury.
I walk everywhere. That's the whole thing, really. I'll add twenty minutes to a journey to avoid going underground, and in Highbury I almost never have to - the park, the high street, the good pubs, the shops I actually use, all of it is on foot from my front door.
It helps that there's genuinely somewhere to walk to. I'd say the best restaurants and pubs in London are within a mile of here, which I know sounds like the kind of thing everyone says about their own postcode, but I'll stand behind it.
Everything below are places I'd actually go.

Our Co-Founder and Creative Director Laura Jackson rediscovers forgotten Mallorcan treasures.
"Four summer days in Mallorca. We found ourselves there to celebrate a family wedding and in the days following, we set out to find some glittering coves and secret swimming spots, local lunch spots and beautiful ceramics to take home. The south east corner is a part of Mallorca I haven't visited since I was young and I felt all the excitement of rediscovering forgotten treasures and well kept secrets." Laura

The best independent bookshops aren’t necessarily the ones with the most books. They’re the ones with a strong sense of what belongs on the shelves, whether that means rare editions, old photography books, small-run magazines or a love of one particular kind of literature. We’ve picked a few with particularly good selections, in some very good buildings, from Rome to Tokyo.

I get asked this one a lot, usually with a slight edge of suspicion. How do you find these places? As though there's a list somewhere and I'm sitting on it.
There isn't a list. What there is, I think, is a habit - one I've been doing for so long that I'd genuinely stopped noticing I was doing it. It's less a method and more a low hum in the background of everything else. Writing it down has been quite revealing, actually.
So. Here it is.

How to discover the coolest places in a new area

Sitting somewhere between an introvert and an extrovert, the idea of travelling solo was something I both debated and fretted over. In 2023, a week after my birthday, I took the leap and headed to the sandy beaches of the Maldives. Three years on, it still feels surreal to type that sentence.

How to Travel Solo? Advice for Introverts and Extroverts!

Summer has a way of sending everyone in different directions. This year, the Glassette team is scattered across an alpine lake in Austria, an old town in the Algarve, a quiet corner of Devon, and the Italian Riviera. No grand theme, no single destination - just the places we've actually booked, the reasons we picked them, and a few recommendations worth saving for your own trip. Here's where we're going.

Glassette Team's Summer Holidays

With the heatwave in full swing, we want to be anywhere but inside - unless there's aircon, which, in British homes, doesn't exist. So: dinner on a paddleboard, a bottle of rosé in a Lime bike basket packed with ice, or the nearest patch of grass with a picnic. Meals don't need to be complicated. Wherever you end up, just not inside.

Trending: Anywhere but Inside

There's a reason we spend so much time rearranging, repainting and quietly obsessing over the right shade of green for a single wall. Home is personal - more personal, probably, than most of us admit. This month, we've been thinking about that: about the objects that make a space feel inhabited rather than staged, and about the particular satisfaction of a room that couldn't belong to anyone else.
Our pride homeware edit is built around that idea. Pieces with colour and character, chosen for the people who know exactly what they want and aren't especially interested in playing it safe. Mustard Made, who are donating 10% of sales to LGBTQ+ rights organisation Outright International throughout June, sit at the heart of it, alongside a handful of other finds that feel considered, a bit daring, and genuinely built to last.
No novelty product here. Just good things, for homes with a point of view.

A peek inside the Glassette team’s baskets right now. From hosting essentials and colour-drenched homeware to summer-ready table settings and pieces for new spaces, these are the products the team are loving, gifting and adding to cart at the moment. Think playful colour, thoughtful details and the little things making everyday routines feel brighter heading into summer.

Britain is not, on paper, an obvious beach destination. The water is cold, the weather is unpredictable, and yet - on the right day, at the right tide - there are stretches of coastline here that rival anywhere in the world. Powder-white sand backed by machair grassland in the Outer Hebrides. Vast, empty dune systems in Norfolk that make you feel genuinely alone. Dramatic sea stacks off the Antrim coast, turquoise coves in Cornwall that look lifted from somewhere considerably further south. The secret, of course, is knowing where to go, and being prepared to get a little windswept getting there.

Chelsea Flower Show is here. To celebrate, we've put together an edit that asks: what if flowers were interiors? The answer, it turns out, is rather beautiful.

Flowers as Interiors

From the sun-drenched hills of Tuscany to the whitewashed shores of Mílos, Europe’s most beautiful summer stays promise slow mornings, long lunches and unforgettable views. Check into Il Palazzotto or Casa Newton for romantic Italian charm, or escape to Hotel Mediterraneo on Kastellorizo for turquoise waters and laid-back glamour. In Portugal, Muxima in Aljezur offers barefoot luxury, while La Colombe d’Or in St Paul-de-Vence remains an icon for art lovers. Marseille’s Tuba Club, Nice’s Hotel du Couvent and Mallorca’s Hotel Corazón capture the effortless elegance of a Mediterranean summer escape.

A pairing that shouldn't work as well as it does, cherry and turquoise operate on pure contrast. Saturated warmth against electric cool, the richness of a deep red-toned cherry meeting the clarity of an almost Mediterranean turquoise.
Cherry anchors the combination, bringing depth, drama, and a sense of the deeply considered. Turquoise cuts through it with energy and lightness, stopping the whole thing from taking itself too seriously. Together they create something that feels simultaneously bold and balanced, the kind of colour story that looks instinctive but is anything but.

For easy, elevated entertaining this season. Think colourful glassware, playful table linens, and effortless serveware that makes even a simple spread feel considered. From sunny garden lunches to last-minute drinks, these are the under-£50 pieces we’ve spotted for hosting in style.

There is a particular kind of swimming that has nothing to do with lanes, lap counters, or chlorine. It happens at the edge of things - where land meets ocean, where rock has been shaped by tide and time, where the water is cold and alive and connected to something much larger than a pool. It happens in places that were carved by volcanoes, built by hand during the Depression, or simply discovered one afternoon at the end of a rocky path.
They exist on almost every coastline in the world, and no two are alike. Some are grand civic monuments, art deco curves cut against a crashing surf. Some are nothing more than a hollow in the lava, filled twice a day by the Atlantic. Some are free, some are heritage listed, some require a scramble down a cliff to reach. What they share is harder to define - a quality of place, of wildness held just barely in check, of swimming that feels like it actually means something.
This is a celebration of the best of them. From the sun-bleached rock pools of Australia to the volcanic coastlines of Iceland and Madeira, from the lidos of Cornwall to a hidden lagoon on a Greek island most people haven't heard of - these are the pools worth travelling for. Bring a towel. The water's cold. Get in anyway!
