The second in our Where We'd Stay series, where we get the people behind exceptional places to stay to talk us through what they built and why.
This time we're on the Devon-Dorset border, at Glebe House: a late Georgian vicarage turned working farm, sleeping up to 18 across nine bedrooms and a handful of cabins, run by Hugo and Olive Guest as an English answer to the Italian agriturismo. Hugo's family home for decades, it was Emma and Chuck Guest's foodie B&B before Hugo and Olive took it on themselves - leaving their jobs in London with a three-month-old baby, an EU grant, and a plan to grow it from three bedrooms to nine. Six years on, there's a restaurant, a kitchen garden, an on-site bakery and salumi ageing room, a sauna and cold plunge, and a sitting room painted a deep terracotta they call fruit fool.
Olive worked with Studio Alexandra on the main house, then took over the interiors herself as the place expanded - painting furniture gradually over the years, and, more recently, teaching herself mosaic-making on a two-metre kitchen backsplash that had to be built upstairs, dismantled, carried down piece by piece, and rebuilt on the kitchen table (where the family ate around it for a fortnight) before it finally went into one of the cabins.
Each instalment covers one property, question by question - the design decisions, the nearby spots worth knowing about, and the one thing guests always comment on. This time: that you've walked into an old friend's house, and somehow you're still being hosted exceptionally well.

Where We'd Stay

Wooden furniture is having a moment of decoration. Tables tattooed with swallows, hands, roses, inked straight into the grain. Wardrobes gone polka dot. Chests of drawers with cows that look like they've wandered off a dairy farm and got comfortable. Even bedframes aren't safe - birds mid-flight across a headboard.
Wood has always taken a mark well. It's just been left plain for too long.

The listening bar has been having its moment - low lights, drinks, someone earnest behind the turntable. Wedding lists have a habit of playing it safe. Twelve of everything, in white, to be used twice a year. This edit takes a different view: presents the couple will actually reach for. Some houses take years to get right. Where We'd Stay is a new series from Glassette where we ask the people behind exceptional places to stay - hotels, villas, houses, the occasional very good Airbnb - to walk us through what they made and why.
We're starting in Suffolk, at Melton Hall: a Grade II listed Georgian house on the edge of Woodbridge, sleeping up to 17, with a pool that (according to everyone involved) stops people in their tracks. It was three years in the making - a collaboration between Cassandra Stavrou, founder of Proper Snacks, and her longtime friend and interior designer Rebecca Sicardi, who spent those years sourcing art and furniture from independent dealers, avoiding big brands entirely, and commissioning two oak tables from a single fallen tree on the grounds.

Good renovation advice is almost always retrospective. You have to make the mistakes first. Room by Room is a new series from Glassette where we ask designers and homeowners to walk us through a single space: what wasn't working, what they spent too much on (and whether it was worth it), and what they'd tell you before you pick up a sledgehammer.
For the latest instalment of Room by Room, we spoke to Corey Hemingway, co-founder of design-led estate agency Hemingway+K, about the kitchen extension of her 1960s London townhouse. What started as a small, dingy space became a warm, light-filled room designed to do everything at once: cook, work, host, and connect seamlessly to the garden beyond.
Twelve months in the making, the project came with its share of surprises - deeper foundations, escalating construction costs, and the occasional challenge of being, in Corey's words, a "tyrannical perfectionist".
